Our Services
Behaviour Support
Understanding why behaviour happens, and changing the things around a person so it happens less.
Usually funded from: Capacity Building — Improved Relationships
Positive Behaviour Support starts from the position that behaviour is communication. Before anything is written down, a practitioner spends time understanding what a behaviour is achieving for the person — escape, attention, sensory input, relief from pain — and what in the environment is driving it. The plan that follows changes the environment and teaches alternatives. It is not about compliance.
What this support includes
- Functional behaviour assessment, done by spending time with the person
- A behaviour support plan written in language the people using it can follow
- Coaching for family, support workers and school or day-program staff
- Reducing and eliminating restrictive practices, with a plan and a timeframe
- Interim plans where a situation needs a response now
- Reporting to the NDIS Commission where a regulated practice is in place
Who it tends to suit
- People whose behaviour is putting their housing, schooling or work at risk
- Families who are exhausted and are not getting anywhere
- Services currently using a restrictive practice who want to stop
- Anyone with behaviour support funding in their plan
Common questions
If yours is not here, ask us — we would rather answer it than have you guess.
Is this about stopping behaviour?
It is about understanding it first. Behaviour that looks difficult is usually meeting a real need in the only way available. Take away the behaviour without replacing the function and you have solved nothing.
What is a restrictive practice?
Anything that restricts a person's rights or freedom of movement — seclusion, physical, chemical, mechanical or environmental restraint. In Australia these are regulated: they must be authorised, recorded, reported and actively reduced. A behaviour support plan that uses one must also set out how it will stop.
How long before things change?
Assessment alone typically takes four to eight weeks, because doing it properly means observing across settings. You should see the environment start changing during that period, not only after the plan is signed.
Do you work with our school or day program?
Yes, with consent. A plan that only works at home is not a plan. Consistency across settings is usually where the gains come from.
