Our Services
Life Skills Development
Learning the practical skills that make daily life easier to run yourself.
Usually funded from: Capacity Building — Increased Social & Community Participation
Life skills work is teaching, not doing-for. A worker sits alongside you while you learn to cook the meal, catch the bus, set up the bank transfer or make the phone call — and then gradually steps back. The measure of success is that you need us less for that task, not more.
What this support includes
- Cooking, meal planning and shopping on a budget
- Money skills — banking, bills, saving and avoiding scams
- Travel training on public transport, route by route
- Household routines, cleaning and laundry
- Phone, email, online forms and staying safe online
- Appointments, self-advocacy and speaking up for what you want
Who it tends to suit
- Young people preparing to move out of home
- People who want to take over tasks a family member has been doing
- People returning to independence after illness or a hospital stay
- Anyone with a specific goal in their plan around building skills
Common questions
If yours is not here, ask us — we would rather answer it than have you guess.
How long does it take?
It depends entirely on the skill and the person. Travel training on one route might take six weeks. Confident independent cooking might take a year. We set a goal with you, record progress against it, and tell you honestly at review whether it is working.
What if I do not make progress?
Then the approach was wrong, not you. We change the method, the worker, the pace, or the goal itself. Sometimes the honest answer is that a task is better supported than taught, and that is a legitimate outcome too.
Can this happen at home?
Mostly it should. Skills learned in your own kitchen, with your own appliances, transfer far better than skills learned somewhere else.
